Description: My original plans were to lead a loop hike from Taylor’s Valley, along the Virginia Creeper and on the AT. But hurricane Helene upended these plans by closing that section of the Creeper between Damascus and White Top. So now is our opportunity to return to the Birkhead Wilderness at that time of year when it is in its full glory. Because of its relatively low elevation, it offers large unobstructed vistas into beautifully haunting woods, a couple of easy stream crossings, and gentle slopes. I am hoping that with the cooler weather we will be rewarded with a riot of deep reds, vibrant oranges, and mellow yellow, and I am begging the gods to bestow a repeat of one of the most beautiful hiking days three of us were privileged to experience a couple of years ago. Please note that, although the loop from the Robbins Branch Parking lot is only 7 miles, I plan to venture out on a side loop off the Birkhead Mountain Trail that will take us to a couple of the camping sites, and this may add a couple of miles of walking. Hence the rating estimate above. I have never done this before, so buyers beware. Please register online NO LATER THAN 6:00 pm on Thursday before the hike. I will send a confirming email to all participants, with transportation logistics options, by 12:00 pm on Friday.
