Virginia Highlands HT, Cabin Ridge and AT (05/16/2026)

Type of Outing: Hike
When: SAT 5/16/2026 9:00 AM
Leader: Nicole Mazgaj
Distance: 10 miles
Difficulty: R-31, Moderate
Elevation Gain: 1600 ft.
Description: After a short but relatively harsh winter for our part of the world, we are all ready to enjoy the glory of spring, and to return to the magnificence of the Mt Rogers area in southern Virginia. As many of you know by now, this is the type of hike some folks love (I obviously do) and others won’t touch with a 10-foot pole. For those of you who have never done it, here is why. Although a good portion of the loop covers familiar trails that crisscross the whole Mt Rogers area, such as the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse trail, it also takes us on a fairly wide detour on the boggy, wet, and rocky Cabin Ridge trail. It is a beautiful trail, shaded by rhododendron and mountain laurel groves, gradually ascending through a rain-forest-like environment toward Deep Gap, where it finally emerges to stunning panoramic views of the surrounding range; but navigating it offers its challenges, especially after a period of rain. If you are ok with getting your boots wet and caked with mud, and hopping here and there to navigate a sea of small and not so small pebbles, you will find this hike very moderate in terms of distance and elevation gain. And you will be surrounded by beauty the whole way. I recommend poles on this hike as there is a fairly significant stream crossing. NOTE: Because this is a wilderness area, I have limited the number of participants to 15. PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE BY THE REQUIRED DEADLINE AND I WILL PROMPTLY GET BACK TO YOU WITH MEETNG PLACE AND TIME OPTIONS.
Cased between the Brushy Mountains to the southeast and the majestic Blue Ridge to the northwest, our day promises to be filled with glistening waters amid the beauty of a mountainous backdrop. Upon the rocky crags and sweeping meadows of Linville, NC come and join me for an all-day adventure at Grandfather Mountain State Park. Together we will climb up Grandfather Mountain from the Blue Ridge Parkway along the Tanawha Trail, climb the ladders up to Calloway Peak, descend the Chute and scramble our way out to McRae's Peak and back again. This adventure offers something for everyone and makes for an excellent hike that rapidly changes, so you’re never bored – and provides you with a workout that will make you use muscles in your body that you never knew you had! This will be a longer day, so come with a cleared schedule and a mind and body prepared to crest the callouses of Grandfather Mountain and touch the sky. Let’s look forward to a crisp trail cap at The Lost Province after the hike! I will message all registrants with carpool details closer to time. Description: Come join me on one of my favorite hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Price Park. This is a super scenic 5 mile loop trail that will take us across multiple stream crossings with big boulders, slick rocks, dark rhododendron tunnels and grassy meadows with wildflowers. This club favorite hike will also afford us opportunities to climb a couple of ladders & a number of wooden steps. Plan on 3+ hours of hiking with one food stop. This is considered to be an easy to moderate hike for EXPERIENCED hikers but not a walk in the park. The terrain can be problematic so wear appropriate shoes and bring hiking poles. You’ll need to watch where you step and know that your shoes will get wet and possibly muddy. Following the hike, there will be an option to stop for ice cream at Kilwin’s near Blowing Rock. Elevation Gain: 4000 ft.
Description: This hike offers two of the most strenuous hikes the North Carolina Mountains have to offer. But your effort will be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views. One hike will start at the Colbert Ridge Trailhead and the other at the Woody Ridge Trailhead. Each hike will ascend approximately 3,000 ft. (Colbert: 3.9 miles, Woody Ridge: 2.7 miles) to the Black Mountain Crest Trail. From there, the Colbert Ridge group will take the BMCT north to Woody Ridge to make their descent while the Woody Ridge group will head southbound on the BMCT and take the Colbert Ridge Trail back. One or two cars will be used for a key exchange so that the group that started at the Colbert Ridge Trailhead can drive back from the Woody Ridge Trailhead. Due to steepness and difficulty of the terrain, dogs are not allowed on this hike, and it is open to experienced hikers only. 10 miles, 4,000 ft. elevation [R50]
Distance: 7 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Description: This is the weekend of Elkin's Trail Days! Come help me celebrate with a resplendent float down the Yadkin River from Ronda to Crater Park in Elkin, NC. This is a beginner-friendly paddle with no more than Class I or II rapids (depending on water levels). We'll all meet at Ronda Memorial Park (the put-in) and organize shuttles from there. I'd ideally like to be on the water by 10, which means we should meet at the park at 9AM. After the paddle, I'd like to extend an invitation for everyone to join me for a crisp paddle-cap at either Fruition or The Angry Troll in downtown Elkin, and encourage all to join in on the festivities of the day. There will be food trucks, special events, dancing and music! Don't have a kayak? No worries! I have a fleet of 3 that I can lend out. First come-first serve. In the event that I run out, kayaks can be rented through Yadkin River Adventures (but I'd recommend booking them early if you're going this route, as that weekend will sell out quickly!) See you on the river!
Elevation Gain: 1600 ft.
Description: It’s rhododendron season at Grayson highlands. Last year we hiked this trail loop on June 11 and caught the pink Catawba rhododendrons at their peak! It was a glorious spectacle seeing the rhododendrons, in all their splendor, blooming on the slopes of Pine Mountain when hiking down the Crest trail. The hike starts at Massie Gap, follows the AT or Rhododendron Gap Trail to Rhododendron Gap, continues on Crest Trail to the Scales, picks up the Virginia Highlands until it splits off at Big Wilson Creek, and then continues on the AT south back to the cars. Expect to see expansive views, rhododendrons, a few ponies and longhorns grazing here and there, and be prepared for some rocky trail conditions. We’ll stop for a scenic break at the large rock outcrop at Rhododendron Gap and have lunch at the Scales. Carpooling will be available from Carolina Diner, Greensboro, at 7 am, and from McDonalds, Jonestown (Winston-Salem) at 7:30 am. For those going directly to the park, please plan to meet at the Visitor Center (just past the park entrance) at 9:30 am. There is a charge to get into the park ($10 per car).
Lake James: Paddle-In Camp & Catawba River (Spillway to Glen Alpine Rd.) (06/12/2026)

Type of Outing: Paddle and Camping
Difficulty: Moderate
Description: If you've ever wanted to go where the mountains meet the sea in NC, there's no closer proximity to that feeling than Lake James! We will be camping at the Long Arm Boat-In Campsites. Mine is L24, so when you book, try to book near if you can! There's something magical about a campsite you earn - one you don't just drive up to, but glide into across open water with the sun dripping low behind the Blue Ridge Mountains. Join me for a weekend paddle-in camping trip at Lake James State Park where we'll combine flatwater paddling, riverside adventure, good food and even better company. This is a primitive paddle-in camping trip meaning: we will paddle our gear into camp. The campsite has a latrine and there is no potable water onsite so you will need to bring or filter your own. If anyone would like to share my campsite and split costs, you are welcome to! I will be camping at site L24, right on the water, and can have up to 6 occupants with me, so please reach out to me directly to let me know if that's something you'd like to do! Itinerary: Friday: Paddle in to camp and set up, meeting at the Visitor's Center at 3PM to get checked in. We'll set up camp, settle in, and enjoy a relaxed evening by the water. For those inclined to do so with me, I intend to catch the sunset on the lake and potentially paddle down to the Paddy's Creek channel. Saturday: Exploration, Potluck, & Campfire We'll put in on the lake around 10AM and explore the Linville Gorge channel. This is a flat water paddle that offers sweeping views of the Gorge and all the majesty of the glassy lake. Come evening, we'll have a potluck dinner (registrants should bring some kind of dish; please email me and let me know what you intend to bring when you register so I can keep track of who is bringing what) and then we'll settle into a cozy environment around the campfire after dinner (I may even sing.) Sunday: Funday! River Paddle Adventure On Sunday, we'll put in on the Catawba River below Lake James and paddle downstream. The full route will be approximately 6-7 miles to Watermill/Glen Alpine Rd. But those who wish to have a shorter paddle may elect to take out at Bridgewater, which is approximately a 3-4 mile paddle from put-in. We will organize shuttles accordingly on the day-of, depending

Description: I have been itching to do this hike for many months, but snow, ice, and swollen streams have not cooperated. So, now that spring is cruising into summer, I challenge the gods to try to stop me. As many of you know, I am partial to rhododendron groves, rock hopping, and stream crossings (among other things). As such, this out-and-back hike qualifies in my book. It takes us along a beautiful meandering creek, which we will cross multiple times. Near the top, the creek flows away from the trail and seems to disappear into the ground as an old cabin comes into sight in a clearing. So, I invite you to join me for a hike on this very lightly traveled trail. This is a hike where I strongly encourage the use of poles even for the most agile and surefooted. This hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers. PLEASE REGISTER ONLINE BY THE SPECIFIED DEADLINE. I WILL PROMPTLY GET BACK TO YOU WITH MEETING PLACE AND TIME OPTIONS.
Description: Join me for this easy hike traversing the original three loop trails of the Knight Brown Nature Preserve and at least one of the newly-added loop trails. We will do the loops twice (reversing course the second time around) for a total of about 7 miles. Those who want to do a shorter hike can do the loops only once. The 183 acres that make up this preserve were donated to the Piedmont Nature Conservancy for the public’s enjoyment. Elevation Gain: 1400 ft.
Description: Come join me for a day in my favorite NC State Park: Stone Mountain. At this time in the season, if we are lucky, the Rosebay Rhododendrons should be in full bloom and I always make a point to try and enjoy them here while they last! This hike will have us beginning at the Backpacker's Parking Lot at 9:00AM and moving up the MST to Wolf Rock, then down Wolf Rock and into the valley below. We will make our way out to the Lower Falls (the rhodies are usually most concentrated on this trail) and then we will return via a horse trail and an old road bed to Wolf Rock, thence down the MST and back to our cars. June is my favorite time of month to be at Stone Mountain and while the third weekend might be a little late for the rhodies in peak, I'm crossing my fingers for it. Pets are welcome, but I require them to be kept on a leash at all times. After the hike, I'll be hosting a social hour at the Railyard in nearby Elkin, NC and would like to encourage all who can to attend! ~10 Miles, 1400ft elev. gain [R-24, Moderate]
Description: This is an interpretive hike that blends local history, ecology, and immersive storytelling to reveal the Big Elkin Creek's hidden world and its critical role within the community of the Yadkin Valley. As we move along the trail, you'll learn how this watershed shaped the landscape, powered early mills, and gave rise to the town of Elkin; why the headwaters matter, what you can do to help protect local watersheds and the mission of both the Elkin Valley Trail Association, who made this trail possible as well as the mission of the Friends of Big Elkin Creek, who are dedicated to conserving this delicate watershed. Please come prepared for a slower-paced hike with several key talking and educational points along the way. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, concerned citizen, or simply curious about the world just beneath the surface, this hike will change the way you see Big Elkin Creek — and maybe even the way you see your place in your own watershed. After the hike, we will hold a social hour held at Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery. Please bring finger-foods for a pot-luck style picnic after the hike. 6 miles, 518 elev. [R-11]
Description: This beautiful 5 mile hike is a club favorite. Although not strenuous with a few uphill sections and gains of about 500’ elevation, this will be a good workout as we encounter numerous stream crossings, rocks, roots, muddy and wet paths, and the opportunity to climb a few ladders. This is considered an easy-to- moderate hike for EXPERIENCED hikers and not a walk in the park. Bring poles, sturdy and appropriate footwear, water and a few snacks.
