Fireflies are one of the most magical symbols of summer in the Piedmont and the Appalachian foothills. But across North Carolina and the world, these tiny lights are quietly disappearing.

In "The Vanishing Light," naturalist, environmental educator and outdoor enthusiast Cody Finney explores the hidden lives of fireflies — what they are, why they glow, and why their numbers are declining. Drawing on ecology, conservation science, and personal field experience, this presentation takes a deeper look at how habitat loss, light pollution, pesticide use, and climate change are impacting firefly populations right here at home.
