Description:
We did this hike in November of last year on a partly sunny and cool day, when we could enjoy the softness of a trail strewn with pine needles and the unique scent of galax preparing for its winter colors, while surrounded by the mystery of winter woods while climbing up to the top of Flat Rock; and then down the Grassy Gap trail, negotiating eroded terrain while savoring the beauty of the plunging vistas of rhododendron groves and letting ourselves soothed by the cooing of Basin Creek. I am now looking forward to going back to this beautiful part of Doughton Park, and hope you will join me, as nature is preparing itself for the explosion of spring. I always promise that the gods will smile on us and bestow good weather. But as I cannot always keep my promise, I’ll try to ensure we can still laugh through the rain drops. There are a few stream crossings on the Grassy Gap section, with the water level varying from low to significant. Poles will be helpful. Although there are no seriously strenuous ascents, we will be walking 12 miles and climb 2300 feet, so this hike is not for beginners and requires mountain hiking experience.
