Description: This hike, led by different PHOC hike leaders throughout the year, is a club favorite. It goes by several names, but Vance Barron, earlier this year, suggested we call it Tour de Wolf Rock, which is a direct translation from the French “le tour du rocher du chien.” To join this hike, however, you will not be asked to memorize this complicated Gallic terminology but can simply say “I’m going to do Tour de Wolf Rock”, because that’s what you will be doing, going around Wolf Rock. The hike uses some of the Stone Mountain established trails but also offers the added attraction of going off-trail from the Black Jack trail to join an old bridle path, get a glimpse of a disabled still, and cross a few streams before pausing to visit the Hutchinson homestead. This is a lollipop hike that starts and ends on the Mountain-to-Sea Trail (the stick of the lollipop) from the backpackers’ parking lot. This is a moderate, scenic, varied, and lengthy hike suitable for most hikers with some experience in mountain walking. Buyer’s beware: We will be crossing a couple of streams, which at this time of year, may be above ankle height. Poles are therefore strongly recommended.
