McAfee Knob and Catawba Greenway Loop

Description: This is a loop hike to McAfee Knob on the AT in Virginia using the Catawba Greenway. The total distance is 11.2 miles with 2,448 feet of elevation gain. [R35] The hike starts at the parking lot of Virginia Tech Sustainability Center on Va. State Route 779 in Catawba, Virginia. The Catawba Greenway goes up to the Appalachian Trail, then north to McAfee Knob. We will eat lunch and enjoy the views at the Knob. The return trip will be by unmarked trails down to the McAfee Knob Fire Road and then south across US 311 back to the AT and the Catawba Greenway trail. Let Vance Barron know by Thursday before the hike if you plan to go. Carpools will leave the Triad to arrive in time to begin hiking at 10:00 a.m.
