Elk Knob Summit Trail / Backcountry Trail

Description: Please join me for a mid-week winter hike north of Boone which could be a lovely snowy hike. For the first part of the hike, we will begin at an elevation of 4,569 ft and climb a challenging uphill out and back trail which includes many switchbacks up to a summit. At the summit we will take in views of the Amphibolite Mountains seeing north to Virginia and south to Mount Mitchell if we are given a day without clouds. The leg back will be downhill and a beautiful walk in the forest. We will take a restroom and lunch break in the park before beginning the second part, backcountry trail. Hiking poles might be needed in navigating this old logging road with a couple of stream crossings. I will email registrants to confirm carpool location and start time on Thursday prior.
