Description:
This three day Mount Mitchell backing trip will include hiking the Black Mountain Crest and Buncombe Horse Trails. Day 1 (Monday, August 12)—Leave the Triad area for the Carolina Hemlocks Campground on N.C. Highway 80. Hike up the Colbert Ridge Trail about 4 miles to Deep Gap and camp there for the evening. Day 2 (Tuesday, August 13)—Hike on the Black Mountain Crest Trail to Mount Mitchell and then down to Higgins Bald and camp there. About 7.5 miles. Day 3 (Wednesday, August 14)—Hike from Higgins Bald to Commissary Ridge and then along the Buncombe Horse Trail back to Carolina Hemlocks Campground (about 10.7 miles). Return to the Triad. Contact Vance Barron no later than August 9 if you plan to go so that carpool arrangements can be made. Total of 22.2 miles over rough terrain. Elevation gain information unavailable. Highest day is R40.
