Description:
You can hike and have your treats, too! This hike consists of two loops, the first being an "up" and then "down" followed by a "down" then "up." One of the highlights of this outing is being able to go to Kilwin's in Blowing Rock afterwards to get an ice cream or other treat – very welcome after a sweltering day of hiking in the summer. The trails are wide, so easy on the feet with a steady climb from the Manor House, across a stunning pasture of wildflowers with views of Grandfather Mt, to the Flat Top firetower which some folks choose to climb to get a more panoramic view of the area. The second half of the hike descends down to and around Bass Lake and then back up to the Cone Manor. Each section is approx. five miles in length. If you prefer not to do the total hike you can hang out at and visit the Manor House. For those who want to do the entire hike, there will still be an opportunity to check out the Manor House and Craft Center after the hike. As mentioned there is a post-hike outing to the ice cream shop but some may wish to opt out and return home which is perfectly fine. Carpooling will be available from Carolina Diner at 7 am and at McDonalds Jonestown, Winston-Salem at 7:30 am. 5 miles, 500 feet [R-10] or 10 miles, 1,000 feet. [R-20]
